Visit the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Area and take a journey back in time aboard the “Volunteer,” a mule-pulled 1840’s replica canal boat, as it coasts gently up and down the Illinois & Michigan Canal.

Accessibility? The LaSalle Canal Boat is cane, walker and wheel-chair accessible, but cannot accommodate motorized scooters.
Weather? There is a lower, covered area on the boat so the tour operates in most weather. Rarely, we will delay, reschedule the tour, or refund the ticket price if a tour is cancelled due to bad weather. For cancellations, the customer will have the choice to reschedule or receive a refund.
Bathrooms? We recommend the clean and comfortable facilities at our Visitor Center BEFORE you go to the boat. There are also a few porta-potties near Lock 14.
Pets? Unfortunately, we do not allow pets aboard the boat.
Food and Beverage? You can purchase snacks and drink items at our Café. On the boat, your own water is allowed or you can bring food and beverages purchased at our café, Lock 16.
Other things to do nearby? Stop at the Lock 16 Visitor Center for information or you can go online to enjoylasallecounty.com. LaSalle County has a lot of great attractions nearby, including Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks, the Hegeler Carus Mansion, Westclox Museum, Reddick Mansion, Weber House and Gardens and a variety of great shopping, antique shops, distilleries, breweries, wineries, and specialty shops.
AUGUST Construction Notice
Starting in August through November, 2021 there will be road construction on IL-351. For visitors traveling to LaSalle on I-80, if you are coming from the Chicago Area, use exit 79A to I-39 S toward Bloomington, then take exit 57 toward LaSalle-Peru, then turn left on Joliet Street/IL-351 to avoid the worst of the construction. For visitors coming from the west on I-80, take exit 75 onto IL-251 S toward Peru, keep left and then take the exit to Route 6 toward LaSalle, turn right on Marquette Street and left onto First Street. The visitor center is at 754 First Street, at the corner of First Street and Joliet Street/IL-351.
