Red River Zoo


Join us in an artistic excursion of the Red River Zoo! We will be hosting art classes that may be taken either as a series or individually. This series include 3 arts classes, ZooArt 101, ZooArt Naturalist illustration, ZooArt Photography. Come and join us for some art fun on a relaxing Sunday afternoon!

Class runs from 1 PM to 4 PM

$25 for members, $30 for non-members.

Ages 14+. (If you have a younger Zoo-goer who you’d like to attend class with, please e-mail us at education@redriverzoo.org)

Supplies: We will provide a sketchbook and pencils, but you should feel free to bring your own art supplies.


ZooArt 101

Class Date: January 5th

Enjoy a low-key observational drawing class in our wolf cabin, where we’ll use our wolf pack and our black footed ferrets as art models! We’ll learn how to observe and animal, make gestural drawings, and break them down into simple shapes to draw.

1:00 PM – 1:30 PM Introductions and set up in the Wolf Cabin

1:30 PM – 2:00 PM Short course in gestural drawings, guided drawing time, creating rough sketches and gestural drawings

2:00 PM – 3:45 PM Free observational drawing time

3:45 PM – 4:00 PM Wrap up and clean up!


ZooArt Naturalist Illustration

Class Date: January 12th

Bring together your love of zoology and art! Enjoy an adventure diving into the world of Naturalist Illustration, making observational drawing and field notes of our animals here at the Red River Zoo! Learn about the history of naturalist illustration and how it positively impacted the field of biology. Settle down with some of our exotic animals in the Discovery Barn and make observational drawings and take field notes of what you notice about the animals’ enclosures and behaviors!

1:00 PM – 1:30 PM Introductions and setup in the Discovery Barn.

1:30 PM – 2:00 PM History of naturalist illustration and a course in how to take field notes.

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM Free observational drawing and note-taking time.

3:30 PM – 3:45 PM Show off your work!

3:45 PM – 4:00 PM Wrap up and clean up.


ZooArt Photography

Class Date: January 19th

Bring together your love for animals and photography! Join us as we tour through the Red River Zoo, taking beautiful photographs of our animal residents. The class will include a course in the artistic principals of photography, and how photography is used in the zoological field. Enjoy a close-up encounter of an animal to photograph, as well as a tour through the zoo, taking pictures of our animals in their exhibits.

*You will need to bring a camera with you for this class

1:00 PM - 1:45 PM Introductions and a brief course that covers the principals and elements of art that go into taking successful and artistic photographs, as well as the importance of photography within zoology.

1:45 PM – 2:00 PM Close up encounter for close up photos!

2:00 PM – 3:45 PM Tour through the zoo, taking photographs of the animals.

3:45 PM -4:00 PM Wrap up and share!
