Become an Extended Range Nitrox Diving Instructor
The SSI Extended Range Nitrox Instructor training provides all you need to organize and conduct the SSI Extended Range Nitrox course. Using either a sidemount or twinset equipment configuration, this course prepares you to teach limited decompression dives to a maximum depth of 40 meters.

Candidate Prerequisites
- Own and use a Total Diving System in the appropriate equipment configuration as outlined in the SSI General Training Standards.
- Have logged at least:
- 20 dives deeper than 30 meters.
- Have the following SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:
- Extended Range Nitrox Diving
- Deep Diving Instructor
- Diver Stress & Rescue Instructor
- Enriched Air Nitrox Instructor
Requirements For Completion
Option 1
- Co-teach at least two (2) separate Extended Range Nitrox Diving programs under the direct supervision of an active status Extended Range Nitrox Diving Instructor Trainer.
Option 2
- Attend a two-day seminar and successfully complete:
- A review of all SSI General Training Standards, and the standards related to the XR programs the candidate is earning a certification for.
- A review of the program-specific student and instructor materials.
- The applicable final exams.
- A dive planning session for orientation to the XR Dive Planning Sheets.
- An equipment configuration session for the appropriate Total Diving System.
- A pool/confined water session that includes the presentation and evaluation of all required program skills. All skills must be done with demonstration quality.
- While acting as an instructor, plan and conduct at least one (1) full decompression dive from the program.
- Demonstrate the ability to rescue an unconscious diver by bringing the diver to the surface from a depth between 5 and 10 meters.
Notes
- The minimum required Total Diving System and stage cylinders must be worn during all in-water training.
- Training dives must not exceed the maximum depth allowed by the program, must include planned stage decompression (real or simulated), and include the minimum number of gas switches required by the applicable program.
All dives must be completed using one of the following configurations:
- A complete Professional Total Diving System, appropriate for single gas switch, non-accelerated decompression diving. One stage cylinder and stage regulator, oxygen cleaned as required.
- A complete Professional Sidemount Total Diving System, appropriate for single gas switch, non-accelerated decompression diving.
- One stage cylinder and stage regulator, oxygen cleaned as required.
This course includes:
- Digital Materials and the SSI Total Teaching System
- SSI Wetnotes
- Classroom sessions: Review of the standards, instructor manual and offer clarity on the digital content. You must complete an Extended Range Nitrox Instructor final exam with a passing score of 90% and be able to independently plan a full dive
- plan using the Extended Range Dive Planning sheet.
- Gear configuration sessions: To assist you in developing an extensive equipment configuration session to use when teaching the course.
- Confined water sessions: To develop Instructor level quality on all skills listed in the Extended Range Nitrox program
- The open water training dives must be conducted at depths no deeper than 40 meters.
- One dive must be to minimum of 30m for certification.
Cancellation Policy
Scheduled Divers:
- Failure to arrive Scheduled time will result in No-Show cancellation.
- Failure to Provide Proper Certification information may result in cancellation if proof cannot be found within the scheduled timeframe.
- Failure to prove self-sufficiency prior to dives (gear setup) may result in cancellation of dives due to lack of necessary beginner skills, this is up to the discretion of our Dive Center Manager.
Tank'd Pro Dive Center Utila is known for providing the uppermost customer service in Utila and ensuring each diver is kept as safe as possible. If any of the above criteria is met, we will be forced to cancel your dives, resulting in a zero refund policy as you have taken the space for another possible diver to join. No-Shows for scheduled dives will also be considered cancellations and no refunds will be processed.
