Monsaraz is a charming, hilltop village with a fortified medieval castle at the south of the village, at the highest point. Made of lime and schist you can hear the echoes of the past in the streets. The village holds many stories of the Knights Templar and it´s brave people. Wander the medieval streets, explore the castle and peruse the beautiful artisan shops. A perfect place to visit in the morning as the village is awakening. Admire the beautiful surrounding countryside and amazing views over the Alqueva Dam; a huge mass of water which is actually man-made. This great lake not only has an important function to supply water to the surrounding area it also offers many activities such as hiking, fishing and horse-riding. Finally, explore the city of Evora´s and learn of its cultural ties and history as you visit the significant monuments, such as the Cathedral of Evora, the Roman Temple of Diana and the Chapel of Bones. Evora was considered a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1986 and is a museum-city with roots dating back to Roman times. In the 16th century it was Portugal's golden age and all kings and queens had residences here. Ceramics Workshop, São Pedro do Corval
A short drive from Monsaraz is the village of São Pedro do Corval, known as Portugals largest pottery centre. The tradition here is pre-historic with specialities including plates, bowls and jugs all with adorned pastoral motifs. Here you will go behind the scenes and watch a master potter at the wheel and take your own pottery workshop.

Cathedral of Evora
Founded in the early 12th century, this is the largest medieval cathedral in the country. Not to be missed.

Roman Temple of Diana, Evora
This temple is a symbol of the Roman occupation of Portugal. It was erected in the first century AD in honour of Diana, the Roman goddess of hunting. Enjoy the peaceful Garden of Diana adjacent to the temple.

Chapel of Bones, Evora
This intriguing chapel holds walls covered in bones and human skulls – a passage to Heaven of Hell – built by a Franciscan monk in the 16th century.
