Tulum, and formerly called Zamá, was a walled city of the Mayan culture located in the State of Quintana Roo, in the southeast of Mexico, on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. It is currently a great tourist attraction in the Riviera Maya and next to it is the modern town of the same name, Tulum. The Mayan city is located within the so-called Tulum National Park.

Akumal (from Mayan: Akumal 'Place of turtles') is historically the first tourist destination on the coastal strip of the Yucatan peninsula bathed by the Caribbean Sea. Originally it was a huge coconut plantation owned by Mr. Argimiro Argüelles until 1958 when he discovered it by CEDAM (Club de Exploración y Deportes Acuáticos de México), an exclusive diving club. Akumal was the headquarters of this group whose interest was the search for underwater treasures
