Join an experienced and knowledgeable guide on an epic journey to the Maze district of Canyonlands National Park to hike through Horseshoe Canyon and explore the beautiful Indigenous wall art strewn throughout the area. We’re pretty obsessed with the archaeology in the southwest, you see the mark of the ancient peoples everywhere and it’s impossible not to feel their presence. On this tour we visit the High Gallery, the Alcove, and the famous Great Gallery, which is the largest and finest panel of the ancient barrier style of rock art. For scale, this panel is 200 ft long and 15 ft high! Archaeologists believe these pictographs could be as old as 4,000 years and were made by archaic hunter-gatherers who used Horseshoe Canyon as their seasonal home. We see evidence of these hunter gatherers’ presence in this canyon roughly 11,000 years ago as they followed mammoths and mastodons to this area. The canyon also features artwork created later by the Fremonts and ancestral Puebloans. In the 1800s, famous outlaws, such as Butch Cassidy, used the canyon as a hiding place and avenue for transportation. Needless to say, the history in this canyon is immense. It’s a moderate 7 mile round trip hike. This tour is quite the trek and the longest tour we offer but you will experience nearly untouched wilderness and have endless spectacular views.
