ASA 101

Basic Keelboat 1 (2 Days)

Location

Bluewater Bay Marina, 290 Yacht Club Drive, Niceville, FL 32578

Description

  • Learn to skipper a 20' - 27' sloop-rigged keelboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn basic sailing terminology, parts, and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.
  • This is a 2 day sailing training course conducted aboard a 26’ J80. The primary emphasis in the training will be the hands-on skills needed to SAFELY and competently operate a sailing vessel of this size under sail and power. Sailing knowledge topics will be covered by pre-course reading assignments and during the classroom presentations and discussion during the course.  We recommend downloading the ASA Sailing Challenge App prior to the course.  A typical schedule is four 2 hours sails with academics and a break for lunch.  We normally start around 8:30 AM and finish around 5:00 PM for the full days. We will mail you the required book.
  • Certification at the ASA 101 Basic Keelboat level requires achieving the sailing skills standards outlined in the ASA International logbook and a 100 question written exam.
  • Students need to wear white bottom/soft sole shoes - or a type of shoe that does NOT leave black marks on boat decks. Preferably you will want to wear a pair of shoes that have good skid resistance on wet surfaces. You don’t need special boat deck shoes; tennis shoes will work just fine. No OPEN toed shoes are to be worn while on board the boat for safety reasons.
  • We suggest you bring sun-block or some form of sun protection, hats, and sunglasses. We will have water on board, but you are welcome to bring your own drinks and snacks. Sometimes we can experience rain showers so I suggest you bring a rain jacket – just in case.  And for cooler weather, I recommend you wear layers so you can take a layer off or add one on to suit the conditions.
